TikTok’s future in the United States is still uncertain. After many delays and talks, President Donald Trump said on Friday night, “We pretty much have a deal.” But he did not share any details.
This short comment has left people wondering: Is TikTok safe in the U.S. now? Or is this just another delay?
Let’s see what’s going on and why this deal is not so simple.
TikTok’s Algorithm is a Big Problem
TikTok is known for its smart algorithm. This is the system that shows users videos they love. It is the reason people stay on TikTok for hours.
TikTok is planning to make a U.S. version of the app. But if this version does not have the original algorithm, it might fail. People love TikTok because of its personalized videos. Without it, the app may feel boring.
Jeremy Goldman
Goldman also said it is very hard to convince millions of users to download a new app. This will not be easy.
Trump Keeps Extending TikTok’s Deadline

For years, there has been talk about banning TikTok in the U.S. Deadlines were set, but Trump has pushed them back again and again. Legally, he does not have a strong reason to keep extending them. But so far, no one has taken him to court.
These extensions give Trump’s team more time to make a deal that would bring TikTok under U.S. control.
No one knows how many times Trump can keep doing this. TikTok is owned by a Chinese company, ByteDance, which worries U.S. leaders. They are concerned about data privacy and national security.
Even though Trump has been tough on TikTok, he has said that he likes the app. He has over 15 million followers there and has used TikTok to connect with young voters.
TikTok is Still Working in the U.S.
For now, TikTok is still available for its 170 million American users.
Big companies like Apple, Google, and Oracle agreed to keep supporting TikTok after Trump’s team promised not to fine them.
People in the U.S. are divided about TikTok. A recent survey by Pew Research Center showed that about one-third of Americans support a TikTok ban. This is less than the 50% who supported a ban in 2023. Another one-third of people are against the ban, and the rest are unsure.
Among those who want to ban TikTok, most are worried about data safety.
Will China Approve the Deal?
The U.S. will soon take the proposal to China’s leader, Xi Jinping, or his team. He said he is not sure if China needs to approve the deal, but he thinks they “probably” do.
Trump
When asked if he believes China will approve it, Trump said, “I’m not confident, but I think so.”
He also said the U.S. will earn a lot of money if the deal happens.
China’s embassy in Washington said they have no new updates and will handle this matter according to Chinese law.
Who Wants to Buy TikTok?

ByteDance has not said if it plans to sell TikTok. But several groups are interested in buying it.
One of them is Perplexity AI, a startup company. Earlier this year, they offered to merge their business with TikTok’s U.S. operations.
Another group is a team led by billionaire Frank McCourt. They have offered $20 billion in cash to buy TikTok’s U.S. business. They also brought in Reddit’s co-founder Alexis Ohanian as an adviser.
If this group wins the deal, they plan to rebuild TikTok using blockchain technology. They say this will give users more control over their data.
McCourt’s organization, Project Liberty, said in a statement that every day without a TikTok deal increases the risk of data misuse. They believe the U.S. government will eventually follow the legal process for a proper sale. They are working with officials and partners to make this happen.
Big Companies Are Also Interested
Two other big names that might be interested are Oracle and Blackstone. Both are large and powerful companies. However, neither of them has commented on the matter yet.
With so many interested buyers and no clear plan, TikTok’s future in the U.S. is still a big question mark. The next few weeks may bring answers—or more delays.
What’s Next for TikTok?

TikTok is still working fine for now. But behind the scenes, things are not so simple.
If this deal happens, it could change how foreign-owned apps work in the U.S. Issues like who controls the algorithm and how user data is handled are at the center of the debate.
One thing is clear: This fight over TikTok is not over yet.
Will TikTok stay the fun, popular app it is today? Or will these changes make it something else?
“We make a lot of money if the deal goes through.” This shows that money and power are big factors in this story.
