Imagine a man who started working in his small family business, become the mayor of his town, and later lead a big political party in Quebec. Rodrigue Biron’s life was full of challenges, surprises, and moments that looked the country.
Rodrigue Biron a well know figure in Quebec politics, died on August 12, 2025, at the age of 90. He lead the Union Nationale and later work as a minister in the Parti Québécois (PQ). His death marks the end of an important chapter in Quebec’s politics history.
Simple Beginnings
Biron was born on September 8, 1934, in Sainte-Croix, Quebec. He started working in his family’s sewer pipe business. He first joined politics as the mayor of Sainte-Croix. With support from his community, he moved to provincial politics and became the leader of the Union Nationale in 1976. He worked hard to rebuild the party. In the 1976 election, Biron won a seat in the National Assembly for Lotbinière.
Joining the Parti Québécois
In 1980, after the Quebec sovereignty referendum, Biron left the Union Nationale because he did not agree with the party. He joined the PQ and was re-elected in 1981. Under Premier René Lévesque, he became Minister of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism. He introduced the “Plan Biron” to help small and medium businesses during hard times.
Later Life and Legacy
After the PQ lost power in 1985, Biron returned to business but stayed involved in politics. In 1997, he tried to lead the Bloc Québécois but came third. He kept speaking up for Quebec and its people.
Biron cared very deeply about his community and Quebec’s growth. Health Minister Christian Dubé called him a “generous and passionate man for Quebec.”
