Hundreds of Little Earthquakes Shake Mt Rainier — But No Eruption Coming

In Washington state, deep under the big volcano called Mt Rainier, more than 300 small earthquakes shook the ground between July 8 and July 10, 2025. This is the largest group of earthquakes ever seen at the mountain — but experts say there’s no need to worry.

Most of these quakes were below magnitude 2.3, too weak to feel. Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey and the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network carefully watched each one.

They have a clear message: Mt Rainier is still at a “Green” alert level, which means everything looks normal.

Why are there so many quakes? Officials say water and hot steam moving under the volcano — where magma sits deep below — can put pressure on rocks and cause shaking.

These kinds of swarms happen every year or two. Still, experts say this one had more shakes than any other since records began in 1982.

People living in Pierce County and nearby cities like Tacoma and Seattle were told not to worry. Authorities say there’s no sign of an eruption and the volcano is not waking up. Mt Rainier last erupted about a thousand years ago, and what’s happening now is just part of its normal pattern.

Why does this matter? Mt Rainier stands 14,410 feet tall above the Puget Sound region. If it ever erupts again, fast-moving mudflows—called lahars—could reach towns and cities nearby. That’s why keeping watch and being ready is so important.

So far, the shaking has stopped and everything is calm. Park officials say timed entry and other rules are still in place—but hiking and camping around Mt Rainier are allowed, as long as people follow basic safety tips.

Still, one question remains: Will scientists see any new warning signs in the coming days? Only careful watching will tell. For now, the mountain rests, its glaciers shining under the sun, while the ground stays quiet below.
