Jorge Costa suddenly dies at 53, Porto mourns legend

Porto, Portugal – A very sad moment came today. Jorge Costa, the brave and loved ex-captain and director of football at FC Porto, passed away at the age of 53. He suddenly fell from a heart attack at the club’s training center in Olival. Even though doctors came quickly and took him to São João Hospital, they could not save him.

His death shocked fans and people all over Portugal. The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, said it was a “sad and early loss” of a real hero who gave everything to his club and country.

Costa’s story showed strength and love for his team. He played more than 383 matches for Porto. He helped the team win the UEFA Cup in 2003 and the Champions League in 2004 when José Mourinho was the coach. He also won eight league titles and many cups.

Born in Porto, Costa played for Portugal 50 times. He was part of the famous team that won the Under‑20 World Cup in 1991. His friends called him “Tank” and “Beast” because of the way he played with heart and power.

After coaching in different countries like Europe, Africa, and India, Costa came back to Porto in 2024. He worked as the director of football to help grow the club from the inside.
