Simple Showers Protect Skin and Save Water.
You have probably seen people on social media showing long shower routines. They use scrubs, oils, and soaps, and talk about “double cleansing” as if it’s a must.
Doctors say — No, you don’t. In fact, too many products and long showers can hurt your skin. They can also waste a lot of water.
Let’s see why a simple shower is the best.
A skin doctor is not happy with these fancy routines. “I’m kind of shocked by what I see.”
Dr. Olga Bunimovich
These routines may look nice online, but they are not good for your skin. They can take away the natural oils your skin needs. This makes your skin dry and itchy.
Dr. Nicole Negbenebor, a skin surgeon, explains, “Your skin protects you. It’s like your body’s shield. You need to care for it. But doing too much can harm it.”
Doctors suggest a very simple way to shower:
You don’t need 10 products. You don’t need to spend 30 minutes in the shower. A quick, gentle wash is enough.
Hot water feels good, but it washes away the natural oils. That can make your skin dry and weak.
Many people think antibacterial soap is good for daily use. But skin doctors don’t agree.
“These soaps dry your skin too much.”
Dr. Bunimovich.
Unless you have a special skin problem like hidradenitis suppurativa (which causes painful skin bumps), you don’t need antibacterial soap every day.
Many influencers talk about using oils during a shower. But here’s the truth.
“Oils don’t add moisture to your skin. They just lock it in.”
Dr. Negbenebor
Water hydrates your skin. Oil helps keep that water inside. So, if you want to use oil, apply it right after the shower when your skin is still damp.
You might have heard about “double cleansing.” This means washing your face with oil first, then with a water-based cleanser.
Doctors say — no.
“You don’t need to double-cleanse your body.” “In fact, many people use soap too much. You should not soap up your whole body.”
Dr. Bunimovich
Just clean your private areas and skin folds. That’s enough. Your skin doesn’t need soap everywhere.
Exfoliating removes dead skin cells. It’s good if done once in a while. But daily scrubbing is a problem.
Scrubs and rough loofahs can hurt your skin. You may see red patches, rashes, or feel itchy. That means you’re exfoliating too much.
“If you get rashes after scrubbing, stop doing it so often.”
warns Dr. Bunimovich
A gentler way to exfoliate is by using products with lactic acid or glycolic acid. But even these should not be used daily.
Long showers don’t just hurt your skin; they also waste water.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says showers use up 17% of water inside homes in the U.S.
Many states are asking people to save water because of droughts. Taking shorter showers is an easy way to help.
A short, warm shower is enough to clean your body and keep your skin healthy.
The next time you see a long shower routine on social media, remember this: You don’t need it.
A simple shower keeps your skin safe. It also saves water and money. You don’t need fancy products or extra steps.
Less is more.
