Ohio Tax Free Weekend Grows Into Two‑Week Mega Deal

Great news for Ohio shoppers: the well-known tax-free weekend is now a two-week tax-free sale. What used to be a short weekend deal is now a big savings event for everyone. It will run from August 1 to August 14, 2025.

Just imagine going to your favorite store or shopping online and not having to pay the usual sales tax of about 5.75%, plus extra county and city taxes.

Even better, this applies to almost everything under $500 per item. This includes laptops, clothes, furniture, kitchen items, books, school supplies, sports gear, and even restaurant meals—all tax-free if each item costs $500 or less.

Shoppers in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and other cities are excited. Many families are using this chance to shop for school supplies. But smart shoppers without kids are also buying everyday items and saving up to 7–8%, depending on local tax rates.

Wondering about the rules? Not everything is tax-free. You’ll still pay tax on things like cars, boats, alcohol, tobacco, vaping products, or anything with marijuana. Also, if a single item costs more than $500, it won’t qualify, even if your total bill is under the limit.

Online shopping works too, as long as you order and pay during the tax-free days and ship it to an Ohio address. Shipping for tax-free items is also tax-free, unless your order includes items that are still taxed.

Coupons and discounts that drop a price below $500 still count. But don’t try tricks like splitting a $600 item into two $300 parts—rules say that won’t work.

‘Governor DeWine says the timing is planned on purpose. It helps families save money on back-to-school needs and also gives everyone a break from rising prices on everyday items. ‘

With inflation and trade tariffs making things cost more, experts say this tax-free period is a good chance to save before prices go up even more.

So what’s the big deal? Why all the buzz? Because even though the tax break is simple, people are finding smart ways to save even more, like enjoying a tax-free breakfast out (as long as each item is under $500) or buying single items online during the tax-free days, even if they’re delivered later. It’s all about timing, totals, and knowing what qualifies.

So, mark your calendar: from August 1 at midnight to August 14 at 11:59 p.m., Ohio’s tax-free shopping is here. It’s big, it’s for everyone, and it can help you save a lot.
